At Home Reuse Trash Bags Instead of Purchasing New
What are some of the challenges or benefits you have experienced using reused bags instead of a bag purposely designed to hold trash?

We try not to take any plastic bags, but you inevitably end up with some.  I've been using them for car or bathroom garbage.  I will try this in my kitchen as well.  We have gotten away from using them for dog waste.  We now use biodegradable dog waste bags on walks, and for the yard we use the empty dog food bag to collect several at one time (usually in the spring!)

    Food Buy Unpackaged Produce
Why do you think these products have so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?

I got reusable cotton produce bags for Christmas and have started using them - love them!

    At Home Plan a Garden
Besides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?

Since I will buy my veggies at a farmer's market, I decided to plant herbs to keep indoors (in/near my kitchen).  The three herbs I use the most are rosemary, parsley, and basil.  I think these will also be relatively easy to grow indoor in pots.

    Food Ditch the Baggie
When is it hardest not to use a plastic bag? What can motivate you to stick to your goal in those cases?

I kept a stack of reusable containers handy - easier to get to than my "tupperware" cupboard.  That seemed to help me choose the container.  I made grabbing it as easy as grabbing a baggie.

Personal Care Practice Low-Waste Hair Care
What are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner, refillable bottle options, or making your own?

I am trying shampoo and conditioner bars that I was given for Christmas.  They came packaged only in cardboard.  I really like them.  They look neater in my bathroom than bottles and take up less space.

The Earthling Co.  I love the shampoo bar, but I'm still getting used to the conditioner bar.  I got the scent "Simple Fresh" - lovely light minty smell.

Nice! What kind/brand did you get?

I'm finishing up a box of dryer sheets and chose the action to "skip the dryer sheets".  I learned that you can dampen a washcloth with apple cider vinegar and toss it in the dryer.  It will soften clothes and reduce static!  Remember to click on "Learn More" in the actions for extra tips.

Hey Trim Your Waste team!  This is Jen, your team captain.  One week to go before the official start date.  I hope we can get a few more team members - feel free to spread the word to friends in Hennepin County.  I took the Master Recycler/Composter class in 2018.  I'll add some recycling tips as we go along.  Welcome!
