The challenge went well. I have adopted some new habits that I would not have adopted if the challenge hadn't motivated me make some switches. However, while I feel like every little bit helps, I am also aware of how much I cannot control regarding plastic use. I wonder if Hennepin county would consider the role of a robust composting program for promoting the use of compostable plastics in situations where plastic is really useful. For example, it's very difficult to conceive of an efficient and sanitary replacement for dog waste bags or raw meat packaging. If there was an easy way to compost plant-based, biodegradable plastic, it would allow companies and consumers to make a permanent switch to plant-based plastic without worrying about the effects this plant-based plastic would have in a landfill where it would create methane as it decomposes. I applaud the county for promoting composting at home; I have two bins, but they don't work well for plant-based plastic. I also know the county is requiring trash companies to offer composting to their customers by 2022. Again, I applaud that. But I hope eventually the county will consider offering composting the same way they offer recycling, and someday require local companies to use plant-based plastic when possible. I appreciate how environmentally conscious Hennepin County leadership has been. Please keep it up and continue to work toward a more equitable and sustainable future! Thank you!

    Really good.
My husband and I buy compostable garbage bags and washing scrubs.
I use free and clear detergent and just a pour a small amount jn the washer. The same goes for the dishwasher.
I buy used children's clothing at Once Upon a Child.
We just got skates for my preschooler at a store called Play it again.
We would like to improve in not using bags when freezing breast milk.

I'm happy with the shampoo & body bar my daughter gave me.
We're also using the Lead Plant Healing Salve in a small glass canning jar. Salve is helping winter cracked skin, plus the jar can eventually be cleaned and used for storage.

Had a b-day party for a four year old and posted the decorations on Plymouth Mamas; people lined up to take and reuse them.

Challenge is going well. Emailed dry cleaner today and asked that they switch us over to a garment bag instead of plastic.

Although we don't use a dry cleaner, it would sure be a nice option for them. You could even pay a deposit and it would save them money in the end!

Have you ever experienced unnecessary packaging or plastic use at a grocery store, restaurant, etc? A local Plymouth resident, Rachel Kemp, just made a free app that she shared with our Plymouth Mom's facebook group. It helps you send emails to businesses when you'd like to ask them to adopt more environmentally friendly practices. I haven't used it yet, but I've downloaded it and will give it a try. I wanted to share it here in case others are interested.

I was disappointed to discover that the liquid-free laundry detergent sheets I bought  (that came in a box), used a plastic container to hold the sheets inside the box! Sometimes you just can't win. But I'll keep trying!

What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

My plastic consumption is much higher than I thought it would be.  Time to seriously curtail take out and examine which products we can purchase in other types of bottles / containers.

I really want to support local restaurants during COVID, but the take-out containers are definitely a problem.

Pets Clean Up Pet Hair with Reusables
What reusable options have you started using to clean up pet hair?

I use a reusable lint brush. It's actually better than the rolls of sticky tape I used to use. It has a base that cleans the brush and collects the hair in the bottom. Much more convenient and works just as well.

Todd, the one I have is by a company called Ovbrn, but it looks like it's out of stock. I found another one by a company called Brellavi that looks almost identical and gets great reviews:

Boy, I'd love to have one of these. Where did you get it? Does it have a product name so that, dare I say, I can look it up on Amazon?
