I was checking out zero waste meal ideas and this statement got my attention.
Worldwide, about a third of the food we produce goes uneaten, which generates up to 10 percent of all planet-heating global greenhouse gas emissions. To put that into perspective, the aviation industry generates about 2.5 percent of emissions. In fact, if food waste were its own country, it would rank third in greenhouse gas emissions, behind only China and the US.

  • Reflection Question
    Food Swap the Snacks
How does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies or homemade or bulk items benefit your household?

I gain more pantry space not buying prepackaged snacks. I snack more on fruit and vegetables which seems healthier.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Shop the Bulk Bins
How has buying bulk impacted the quality of the food you receive? Why do you think our society relies more on prepackaged foods rather than buying in bulk?

I think buying in bulk is fresher.  I want to believe the product is replenished more often and contains less additives  that would be needed to have a longer shelf life.
  • Reflection Question
    At Home Avoid Harmful Plastics
Do some research on polystyrene and polyvinyl. How many items in your house already contain these toxins?

I really do not like the expanded foam variety of polystyrene.  I avoid  this type of plastic while shopping.  For one action item, I will try to refuse this type of container for my to go meals or left overs.

Polyester, nylon, acrylic, and other synthetic fibers (all forms of plastic) is in 60% of the material that makes up our clothes worldwide.  I bet that can create a lot of microfibers floating around.

About one week left of the challenge.  Tell me one thing you learned about plastic this month.

One area that "feels" harder are products you use in the bathroom:  Toothpaste, deodorant, floss, shampoo.    I'm experimenting and would love to figure out ways to reduce here.

We are over halfway through the challenge......I think it is hard to stay motivated when I see plastic everywhere and how it can help provide convience to meals and daily tasks.  I love my Earth so I will continue to try to reduce my plastic footprint and figure out baby steps to better habits.

I cleaned my bathroom sink with my spray bottle of white vinegar today.  I always like how well it works.   I don't really care for the smell but the results are great.   I guess I could add some essentials oils?  Does anyone else have a natural cleaning hack they want to share.

I like the way teatree oil smells - i wonder if you could add a drop or two for the smell?

I wanted to share this idea of an alternative use for a natural loofah sponge that Wendy L. passed along. She purchased some of the completely compostable loofah "sponges" from www.shopmindfulgifts.com. They are marketed as bath sponges but can be used as kitchen sponges too. The link is: https://shopmindfulgifts.com/products/brooklyn-made-natural-all-natural-loofah-sponge?_pos=3&_sid=591f9e6f4&_ss=r
