  • Reflection Question
    At Home Shop Used
What kinds of items have been easy for you to find used? What has been hard?

Clothes for me, and adult woman, have been easy to find used. Ice skates and kids skis were easy to find used. Tall, skinny boys clothes and men's clothes have been more difficult. Joined my neighborhood Buy Nothing group and randomly was gifted the leather tow rope covers I needed for my son vs. having to buy new!

In what ways is social media an effective tool for sharing your values?

It helps normalize the behavior and shows how easy and cost-effective a lot of sustainable behaviors really are.

Community Give the Gift of Experiences
What did you give as a gift? Do you think the recipient has ever received a gift like this before? What did they think of it?

I gifted my daughter a sewing class and her teacher gift cards to support local restaurants. I often try to gift my kids experiences, although the sewing class is new to her as she has been wanting to learn how to use my sewing machine. I often will gift restaurant gift cards and it is an easy way to support local restaurants during COVID restrictions. I'm sure the teacher will appreciate the treat and ease of ordering in vs. having to cook since I know teaching through distance-learning has been time consuming and stressful.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Swap the Snacks
How does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies or homemade or bulk items benefit your household?

Baking snack/treats vs. buying prepackaged is an activity I can do with my kids during distance learning and reinforces math and science lessons such as dividing and multiplying when measuring ingredients, activating yeast in warm water, etc.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Shop the Bulk Bins
How has buying bulk impacted the quality of the food you receive? Why do you think our society relies more on prepackaged foods rather than buying in bulk?

The bulk chocolate chips and banana chips actually taste better than the packaged versions. Packaged is definitely more convenient and I would guess some people may feel that prepackaged is more sanitary. I don't have this hang up.
  • Reflection Question
Personal Care Buy Reusable Bathroom Products
Has your experience using a reusable product changed greatly from when you used a disposable one? What are the benefits of using a reusable product?

No change in experience. Using reusable cloths vs. cotton balls does create laundry, but the amount is small. Benefit of refill soap vs. buying new individual bottles each time is it costs less and takes up less storage space.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Buy Unpackaged Produce
Why do you think these products have so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?

    Andrea Siegel's avatar

I think the plastic packaging is meant to appeal to the consumer. It's a place for branding and marketing plus gives the sense of ease and cleanliness. I notice sometimes that organic produce has more plastic packaging than conventional--perhaps as an easy way for stores and consumers to identify it?

What maintenance steps do you take to keep your electronics in good working order?

I keep my phone charged, clean, and software up to date so that I can use if for as long as possible. I typically get a new generation every 4-5 releases, mostly because I need and use the camera for work. I did give my daughter a phone recently, and we chose to purchase a refurbished iPhone vs. buying a brand new phone.

Good call on refurbished goods :) I haven't tried this with my phone yet (Samsung) but have always bought refurbished Macs and have never had an issue.
  • Reflection Question
    At Home Recycle Plastic Bags
Has separating your plastic bags for recycling helped you identify how you might reduce how many you have? What are you doing differently now?

The pandemic had me buying things in plastic bags again due to not being able to bring my own bags and containers. I do try to opt for food items not in plastic, e.g. the sugar in the paper sack vs. the plastic bag. I do save and use all plastic bags like cereal bags, tortilla bags, etc. for picking up dog waste in my yard.

What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

I was not surprised that my plastic consumption is less than the average person's consumption as I have been working on reducing use of plastic for a few years now. I wasn't sure how to calculate the plastic in my household goods, though. For example, I just bought an outdoor broom which has a plastic handle and bristles.
