    Community Pick Up Plastic Litter
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

Once I start a habit of picking up litter, I started paying attention to how much litter I spotted even when I wasn't actively looking. It's easy to see plastic bottles or wrappers along the sidewalk all over the neighborhood, and makes me appreciate how different Minneapolis would look if we lived in a plastic-free world.
  • Reflection Question
Food Cook Meals with Zero Plastic Waste
Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some low-waste or reusable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable? Are there any items where it would be difficult to avoid plastic waste?

Since I buy so much from the bulk section (rice, flour, oats, olive oil, etc.), and get almost all my produce without plastic, I expected cooking a meal without plastic to be fairly easy, yet I realize that there are still so many common staples that don't have a bulk option, and any meal I want to make that requires bread, cheese, plant-based meat options, etc. still has plastic in it.

On-the-go Use A Reusable Mug or Collapsible Cup
Great job on getting rid of your disposable cup habit! How does it make you feel? Are there any situations where you still struggle to use a reusable mug?

I usually put a mug in my bag the night before so I remember to bring it to work with me, but sometimes if there's a separate meeting or event that provides coffee (or if I'm going to a coffee shop that doesn't provide mugs), it's harder to remember to bring my own.

    Food Make Your Own
How do you feel about being more involved in the food preparation process? Joyful, overwhelmed, engaged, empowered? What are the benefits of choosing to process or produce your own food instead of buying it pre-processed?

Since I eat a lot of granola bars, I tried making my own to avoid all the plastic. It was certainly more time-intensive, and still required parchment paper during baking that got thrown away, but I'm looking forward to the next couple weeks of not having a bunch of wrappers in the trash. And it's fun being able to decide on my own nut selection and chocolate chip to nuts to dried fruit ratio!

What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

My plastic footprint was much lower than the average (although almost 40 lbs/yr is still a lot), but I'm guessing my actual impact is much higher than the calculator suggests. Even though I always use reusable grocery bags, food storage containers, and cups, the times when I order something online, buy snack food contained in plastic, or other non-daily plastic use is easy to forget about and include in my count.
