Jessie Roelofs 2/13/2021 2:32 PMMy mother in law gave me this beautiful flower "cake" for my birthday that came on a specialized plastic cake stand that wouldn't work for real cakes. Once the flowers died I reached out to see if the floral shop could reuse it and they were very happy to do so. I think this challenge has helped me to think through the disposal process more than I might otherwise. -
Jessie Roelofs 2/06/2021 2:50 PMHi friends! One of our teammates and I were just sharing some of our favorite media about plastic waste and I thought I'd share them with you as well!

Jessie Roelofs 2/03/2021 3:20 PMHas anyone heard how dental professionals feel about tooth tabs? I really like them, but I also want to make sure they are effective and not harming my enamel ... -
Reflection QuestionPersonal Care Choose Plastic-Free DeodorantWhat benefits have you noticed after switching deodorant? Softer skin? Better scent? More peace of mind?
Jessie Roelofs 2/01/2021 12:23 PMI LOVE the scent of my new deodorant (which I got from our neighborhood buy nothing group from a neighbor who only used it once). The brand is Schmidt's and it's scented like lavender and sage. Feels like a special treat to get to wear it each day -
Jessie Roelofs 1/30/2021 4:05 PMWent on a walking tour of murals around an industrial area today and found LOTS of trash to pick up -
Jessie Roelofs 1/28/2021 12:37 PMFound LOTS of trash today. Haven't quite cracked the code yet on where's the best place to look for it - especially in the winter. -
Jessie Roelofs 1/27/2021 6:20 PMBeen thinking a lot about clothing and microplastics and trying to mend/fix more items. It's been fun to build my confidence in this area! -
Jessie Roelofs 1/26/2021 7:55 PMSuper excited to learn that you can recycle contact lenses!-
Jessica Moe 1/31/2021 4:31 PMYes! The clinic I work at collects contact lenses for recycling. Here is the link for others to find a recycling drop off near them :D

Reflection QuestionAt Home Watch a DocumentaryWhich documentary did you choose to watch? What did you learn?
Jessie Roelofs 1/24/2021 9:03 PMI watched the PBS / Frontline documentary Plastic Wars. I learned how entirely cyclical the plastics problem is - environmentalists start to make noise about the plastics problem, plastic-producing companies soothe everyone's anxieties by saying they'll just make recycling streams better, folks get quieter, and then nothing changes. Over and over again. It's maddening and a really good reminder to just stop. consuming. plastic. (Easier said than done, of course). Also, seeing the fields full of American plastic in Indonesia is so so upsetting. -
Reflection QuestionCommunity Share My ActionsIn what ways is social media an effective tool for sharing your values?
Jessie Roelofs 1/23/2021 3:03 PMI think it can be well utilized in multiple ways: 1) to share information and 2) to inspire others to do. Perhaps counterintuitively, I think a big part of inspiring others is showing failure. I think there's a notion that environmentalists or environmentally-minded people are judgey and will call you out if you're not perfect 100% of the time. I think sharing your goals and failures humanizes it and shows that no one is perfect (In the MRC class, hearing some of these "failures" from some of the presenters made me feel so much more at ease with my baby steps)
