    Community Pick Up Plastic Litter
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

I could have picked up more except for the snow and not going out much.  I'll do more in the spring.

    Personal Care Choose Plastic-Free Deodorant
What benefits have you noticed after switching deodorant? Softer skin? Better scent? More peace of mind?

I purchased Schmidt's Rose + Vanilla Natural Deodorant Jar.  It comes in a small glass jar and is a paste which is warmed between the fingers and spread on.  The package comes with a small spatula to help remove the product.  I like the natural smell of the concoction.  The company will give the consumer a free jar if six jars are returned to them for reuse.

I also switched to a cream deodorant in a glass jar, I use the baking-soda free Grapefruit scent from MeowMeow Tweet and I've really liked it. One thing I've been surprised by is that I like spreading the deodorant cream with my hands, without an applicator! I realized when I spread it with my hands, like lotion, I'm more aware of how much I am using and know for sure that I covered the area thoroughly.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Make Your Own
How do you feel about being more involved in the food preparation process? Joyful, overwhelmed, engaged, empowered? What are the benefits of choosing to process or produce your own food instead of buying it pre-processed?

    Marie Listopad's avatar
    Marie Listopad 2/08/2021 8:13 AM
I feel slightly overwhelmed.  I am reluctant to buy the necessary equipment and put in the time it takes.  I do not have a ready supply of extra fresh vegetables to process.  My husband probably wouldn't eat anything I canned or pickled and he doesn't do dairy.  This is on my "wish list".

    Food Ditch the Baggie
When is it hardest not to use a plastic bag? What can motivate you to stick to your goal in those cases?

I use zip lock plastic bags mainly to store craft supplies.  They are so convenient because one can see what is in the bag and they are easy to store and carry.  I suppose I could switch to a net drawstring bag.  I reuse any flat plastic I have to pick up my dog's feces.  What can I say?  It is convenient and provides a second use.

I also have used plastic bags for crafting.  I cut the bags or mailing envelopes into circular strips and tie them together.  I have a big ball of this stuff ready to use as yarn or string.  I will probably make a crochet mat or a macramé piece.

I find that I continue to use zip lock bags for dry goods in the kitchen but I try to reuse them as much as possible. My wife and I have switched to glass containers for left overs and extended storage for most things.

What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

I was not surprised by my estimated plastic footprint.  I do know I can do better.  I am particularly concerned with the amount which comes in delivered packages.

    On-the-go Pack a Lunch
What are some of the unexpected benefits of bringing your own lunch?

    Marie Listopad's avatar
    Marie Listopad 2/01/2021 2:39 PM
Benefits are many.  When I am at work, all I have to buy is vending machine food so I can avoid that.  I make the lunch myself and I know what it in it and the food tastes better.  I use the waxed paper wrapping many times before it falls apart.  The lunch is fresh and organic.  I save money.

    At Home Watch a Documentary
Which documentary did you choose to watch? What did you learn?

    Marie Listopad's avatar

I watched the top two documentaries.  The turtle with the straw up the nose was shown on both.  I had heard that the plastic waste problem was immense.   Seeing the pictures has reinforced my desire to reduce the plastics I use.  The second documentary told about plastic industry efforts to encourage plastic use by not telling the entire truth about its recyclability.  Now, I am angry and will redouble my efforts to reduce and reuse plastic and recycle what I can.

    Personal Care Replace My Toothbrush
What are the benefits of switching to bamboo, wood, or recycled-content toothbrushes? How could you get others to make this change, too?

I enjoy the feeling of the bamboo handle.  A toothbrush is a small and personal item.  I really do not know how to encourage anyone else to use a recyclable toothbrush.

Just bought a recyclable toothbrush.  The Wedge has several brands of shampoo and conditioner bars.
