I buy less when I don’t buy items in a bag. I spent less money on food this month doing the challenge. It’s been good to make my own products and reduce my consumption.  I will continue to use up what I have and plan to not revert back to old ways!!

I only had to throw away one tea bag wrapper! I’m using bulk peppermint for tea and recycling a paper wrapper from the green tea. Next week I have to try to find a way to get coffee without it costing so much and still be plastic free. My refrigerator is nearly empty because I have refused to buy plastic wrapped food. And the grocery stores I visited had lousy produce! I’m using things in the freezer , but how will I freeze produce from the garden this summer? Challenging!

I joined the challenge because I want to really refine my lifestyle to reduce plastic and waste. The challenge gave me the extra push to make some switches to sustainable choices; ones I have wanted to do for a while. Today I visited the Zeroish store and bought silk dental floss. I also am going to make my own detergent. I brought my own jar and bought citric acid and oxygen brightener from the bulk bins. My daughter and granddaughter came along and found dry shampooand other products to try.  There are so many cool things out there. I bought a sample size of a conditioner bar for my hair and lip balm in a cardboard tube. I may try making my own in the future!  It’s been so much fun and got me going on a more sustainable lifestyle!

Washed my hair with the shampoo bar today again. I am going to try it for a few weeks and see how it goes. I have so much inventory to use up to be free of plastic. I also brought my own bags when shopping. I’m buying much less when I try and to avoid the plastic packaging!

    Food Shop the Bulk Bins
How has buying bulk impacted the quality of the food you receive? Why do you think our society relies more on prepackaged foods rather than buying in bulk?

The quality depends on the store. The supermarket had bulk, unwrapped broccoli, but it didn’t look very good, especially the organic. My Coop has better quality produce, but I wasn’t going there today- it’s not as close.  I did buy organic almonds at the supermarket and found they tasted much better than the ones from the 3  pound bag at Costco that I used to buy.  More expensive, but better quality! So, packaged food is cheaper and that’s probably the reason most people buy it. Also with a family, I think people try to do what’s easier especially when they’re working and time is limited.!

    Personal Care Purchase Alternative Toothpaste
Currently, most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. What has been your experience using plastic-free toothpaste options? How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?

I made tooth powder using bentonite clay and other ingredients I had on hand. I’d like to never buy another plastic tube of toothpaste!

I've made diy toothpaste like this too. Do you ad a peppermint oil or other flavor? I have been keeping mine unflavored because I can't picture mint and salt together.

A zero waste food day, cooking and using leftovers! Used dry shampoo that I made myself from ingredients at home.

    At Home Recycle Plastic Caps
What are some things you can do to avoid using plastic bottles and plastic caps in the first place?

There’s only one plastic bottle in my recycling this week, and that’s on a supplement. It makes me think and wonder…that maybe we don’t need all the supplements we take. I have quite a few in my medicine cabinet. It would save money, too, as well as reduce plastic waste.

I ate zero waste meals all day, and am making turkey bone broth to make soup.

    Personal Care Choose Plastic-Free Deodorant
What benefits have you noticed after switching deodorant? Softer skin? Better scent? More peace of mind?

I’ve been using a deodorant stone for a few years now and it works great. The one I bought last time had a little plastic dish it sits in. Next time I’ll look for one without that. I’ve also made my own deodorant but the stone or crystal works better,
