Less Waste Mpls

"I have been seriously working to reduce waste a little over a year. I want to create an environment where I don't feel like I am poisoning myself, my loved ones, and visitors. I want to help live as close to zero waste as possible. I have a lot to do to get there, but that is my goal."

Flossing is a hard habit to maintain for a lot of people! Does making your flossing routine more sustainable give you motivation to keep up this notoriously difficult habit?

I think that having an option that I can feel good about and incorporate into my journey towards much less waste, makes it easier to remember to do, because I am making conscious decisions and I am much more aware in general.

    Food Shop the Bulk Bins
How has buying bulk impacted the quality of the food you receive? Why do you think our society relies more on prepackaged foods rather than buying in bulk?

If I were to purchase more bulk, I would be buying healthier foods. I think part of my hesitation with bulk in the past has been that it would require me to plan my cooking ahead more (say - soaking the beans). As I have become better an planning my meals and cooking with recipes, I am eating healthier and also using the bulk bins more.

My other hang up with the bulk section was that I wouldn't bring my containers. I know that I could use paper bags there, but it was more that I wasn't thinking about using bulk and planning for it, and so I would forget. I am starting to be much more mindful when I shop and cook, but I am at the VERY BEGINNING stages of this.

Tare Market in Minneapolis has really helped me get used to buying bulk and think of ways to reduce my day to day waste. I was able to invest in reusable straws, cloth paper towels and napkins that I now use instead of paper. Also, wrappers to replace plastic wrap and tin foil for food storage.

I thought I had to throw away plastic caps. It feels good to know that as long as I put it on the bottle that I can recycle it with bottles. I am working to purchase fewer things that use plastic bottles, but at the moment, I am mostly using what I had already purchased, rather than purchasing a lot.
