Community
Pick Up Plastic Litter
I will pick up 7 piece(s) of plastic litter each day and dispose of it responsibly.
At Home
Choose Natural Clothing Fibers
I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers like polyester, nylon, acrylic or spandex.
At Home
Skip the Dryer Sheets
I will replace dryer sheets with a reusable alternative or use nothing at all.
Pets
Prepare Homemade Treats
I will prepare my own pet treats to avoid plastic packaging.
At Home
Extend the Life of Electronics
Manufacturers want you to replace your phones every year. I will keep my phone for at least 3 years and make any necessary repairs or updates to keep it functioning as long as possible.
At Home
Avoid Harmful Plastics
I will avoid buying toxic plastics, including polyvinyl, polystyrene and polycarbonate (#3,#6 and #7).

Irene Kostka 3/01/2022 9:25 AMI learned that there are things I can do to create a better world for all of us. I also learned that many of the changes for one person are a small improvement but if many make the change we've got a chance to make a big difference. Thanks to Hennepin Co. for doing the Challenge. Keep it up! -
Irene Kostka 2/26/2022 8:47 AMwhen I walk for exercise I have always picked up trash. I don't think I could walk anymore without picking it up . I don't understand how people can just throw trash on the ground and thinks it's ok. -
Reflection QuestionAt Home Extend the Life of ElectronicsWhat maintenance steps do you take to keep your electronics in good working order?
Irene Kostka 2/21/2022 12:47 PMI've been reading about electronics and have learned how to clean them and in some cases buy parts to extend the life of the system. -
Reflection QuestionAt Home Choose Natural Clothing FibersWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
Irene Kostka 2/21/2022 12:45 PMBy buying clothes new or used made from natural fibers we reduce the plastics that eventually enter our environment when thrown away. Natural fibers were all we had years ago and we did just fine until plastic came along. Natural fibers also dye better than plastic fibers. -
Irene Kostka 2/14/2022 11:09 AMIt certainly is making me more aware of what's good and bad for the environment and people. I find myself no longer reading ingredients of food items at the grocery store now I look at what the containers are made of and don't buy the item if not recyclable. I know what one person does is not enough but if a lot of people do this it will mean something to the environment. I also have been talking to people who are telling me they are bored and telling them about the plastic free challenge and what they can do to help.

Irene Kostka 2/14/2022 11:01 AMI'm paying more attention to the numbers on the plastic items in the grocery store and am realizing that there are so many that can't be recycled. How do we change this? I'm starting by not buying the product but what else can we do? -
Irene Kostka 2/11/2022 8:58 AMThe one area of the challenge that I don't know how to do is the one on extending the life of electronics. Where can I learn about that? -
Reflection QuestionAt Home Avoid Harmful PlasticsDo some research on polystyrene and polyvinyl. How many items in your house already contain these toxins?
Irene Kostka 2/09/2022 7:14 AMI have no idea which items are polystyrene and polyvinyl but I will check into it and see which I can not buy. -
Reflection QuestionAt Home Skip the Dryer SheetsHow difficult (or easy!) has it been for you to cut dryer sheets from your laundry routine?

Reflection QuestionPets Prepare Homemade TreatsDoes making your own pet treats seem like a habit you can keep up in the long term? What else can you do to reduce your use of plastic packaging that can come from taking care of your pet's needs?
Irene Kostka 2/08/2022 8:03 AMI buy kitty litter in a cardboard box. Food in cans and have stopped buying treats in any kind of plastic bag.
