Jess's Actions
On-the-go
Visit a packaging-free store
I will visit a co-op or zero waste store to check out my local options for bulk products and plastic-free items.
At Home
Reuse Trash Bags Instead of Purchasing New
I will reuse existing bags such as pet food bags, grocery bags, or online shopping bags instead of buying new bags to line my trash containers.
At Home
Choose Natural Clothing Fibers
I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers like polyester, nylon, acrylic or spandex.
On-the-go
Pack a Lunch
I will skip eating out and bring a lunch from home in reusable containers.
On-the-go
Skip the Straw
I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
On-the-go
Use A Reusable Mug or Collapsible Cup
I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own collapsible cup.
Community
Ditch Disposable Decorations
I will avoid using disposable decorations, such as balloons and plastic table coverings, for special occasions.
Personal Care
Choose Plastic-Free Deodorant
I will use deodorant that is a plastic-free bar, in a tin or a jar, or I will make my own.
Community
Estimate Your Plastic Footprint
I will complete a plastic consumption calculator to learn about my plastic footprint.

Jess Hall 2/23/2023 11:25 AMAlmost the end of the plastic free challenge and I have really enjoyed learning from this and continually checking my own habits! Can't wait to make it a plastic free year and keep up with these reminders! -
Reflection QuestionCommunity Ditch Disposable DecorationsHow did you decorate for your party? How will you use these decorations again?
Jess Hall 2/15/2023 6:42 AMI made food instead of getting lots of takeout and used reusable and compostable plates and silverware -
Reflection QuestionOn-the-go Skip the StrawHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Jess Hall 2/03/2023 7:54 AMI bought some reusable glass straws and I really enjoy them. Knowing I could use them in hot drinks too without worrying about plastic leeching is nice! -
Reflection QuestionAt Home Choose Natural Clothing FibersWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
Jess Hall 2/03/2023 7:53 AMThis is somewhat tough. On the one hand, natural fibers can be really warm and wicking (like wool), but synthetics are sometimes necessary when being active outdoors. Lately, I have been trying to buy all my synthetics second-hand from thrift stores or reuse sites (Patagonia worn-wear is a favorite). I did buy a nice wool sweater and I plan to have it forever! -
Reflection QuestionAt Home Reuse Trash Bags Instead of Purchasing NewWhat are some of the challenges or benefits you have experienced using reused bags instead of a bag purposely designed to hold trash?
Jess Hall 2/03/2023 7:51 AMI like to use any plastic shopping bags in the small trashcans around my house (office, bathroom, etc.). It's nice to have a liner in the bin and it makes taking the trash out easier. -
Reflection QuestionOn-the-go Use A Reusable Mug or Collapsible CupGreat job on getting rid of your disposable cup habit! How does it make you feel? Are there any situations where you still struggle to use a reusable mug?
Jess Hall 2/03/2023 7:43 AMI am really good about bringing my coffee from home in a mug, but after COVID I like to order ahead at coffee shops which makes it almost impossible to ditch single-use cups. -

Jess Hall 2/03/2023 7:41 AMDay 3! I've found it to be easier to be plastic-free when I'm working from home than in the office... takeout and coffee are tempting. -
Jess Hall 2/02/2023 10:02 AMDay 2! Added some more daily actions today for myself. Keep up the hard work everyone :)
