David's Actions
Pets
Use biodegradable poop picking up bags rather than old plastic bags.
Every day we walk our 85 lb dog. He poops on every other walk. We formerly used old plastic bags to pick up his poop. Now we use biodegradable bags to pick up his poop.
At Home
Plastic to Glass milk containers
I will continue to use only glass milk containers rather than plastic milk containers.
At Home
Replace plastic food containers with non-plastic containers
I will take items such as yogurt containers, sour cream containers and other plastic food containers and search for non-plastic alternatives.
At Home
Plan a Garden
I will plan an herb or vegetable garden for next year at my home, workplace, or community garden.
At Home
Recycle Plastic Caps
I will recycle 2 plastic caps per day by placing them back on the plastic bottles before placing them in my recycling bin.
At Home
Recycle Plastic Bags
Instead of trashing them, I will recycle 2 plastic bags per day by bringing them to a drop-off.

David Gagne 2/26/2023 5:43 PMIt is difficult in the midst of every day events and scheduled activities to maintain a focus on this. But I am also aware, after reading this morning's STRIB article about the need to reduce our levels of waste burned in the County incinerator, that we need more advice and guidance on how to reduce waste - and we make most of our food from scratch so we don't buy much meal container waste. Our use of plastics is with yogurt, cottage cheese, sour cream, etc. There just aren't options of other containers. And I have failed at making yogurt so often that I am not much interested in trying again. -
David Gagne 2/10/2023 5:36 AMIt continues to be difficult to find alternatives to plastic containers of sour cream, yogurt and cottage cheese. -
David Gagne 2/05/2023 8:39 AMThis challenge provides a continuing inspiration and motivation to look for other ways of recyclying or not using plastic containers in the first place. The greatest difficulty is finding non-plastic alternatives to yogurt, sour cream and cottage cheese containers. We love having replaced our plastic 1/2 gallon and one gallon milk containers with returnable glass containers from Autumnwood Farm, including making new friends as we share pick up of the dairy products at a house in St. Paul. -
David Gagne 1/05/2023 5:39 AMI have several questions. 1) Why are dryer sheets not good to use? 2) We have some of those reusable produce bags but tend not to use them because the produce doesn't last as long in the crisper drawer of the frig. Suggestions? 3) What can we do to get our co-ops to use less plastic and join in this effort? I am looking forward to learning from others and sharing our experience. I hope people will post their questions and experience.-
Denise Musser 1/18/2023 11:29 AMIronically, the Blue Apple is made of PLASTIC. -
Denise Musser 1/18/2023 11:20 AMI am not sure about that all dryer sheets are harmful to the environment. There is a type that is paper, I believe.
With regard to food waste, I have been using these: https://www.trueleafmarket.com/products/bluapple-ethylene-gas-absorption-starter-set?variant=40026644232&gclid=CjwKCAiAzp6eBhByEiwA_gGq5IG3hdvxthWnMc0WGp-P0Plquiyz34F_QySeO9JoCAVnYevpUURduRoCjh8QAvD_BwE and they are very helpful in keeping fruits fresh. Vegetables, not so much, but I find that if my veggies get dehydrated, you just let them sit in water (carrots, celery) and they rehydrate. I've also learned to make powdered, dried kale for use in smoothies. This can be done with swiss chard, etc. by putting your oven on 195, cracking the door open and letting the cut up green leafys sit until they are dried out - about 15 minutes.
