Jean's Actions

Community

Donate my extra kitchen utensils, dishes, and cups

I organized my silverware drawer and kitchen cupboards, intent on finding items I no longer use or of which I simply have more than I need. I will donate them to Bridging. By sharing more of what I already have, less of these items need to be produced for others to use.

I took a "field trip" to  my local co-op today, looking to remind myself of all the bulk options they offer, from flours to nuts to oils and vinegars to spices to honey to chocolate candies to granolas and everything in between.  I've renewed my interest to shop their bulk section more to reduce the plastic packaging that I accumulate through grocery shopping.

What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

While we don't have a lot of plastic consumption in our house, I know I still have a long way to go to get to zero.  I've been sobered by recent trips to the grocery store while looking for options to make purchases that don't involve plastic.  It is difficult!  I subscribe to food delivery through Imperfect Foods, which I value for their commitment to reducing food waste, however, I'm also recognizing that saving blemished veggies, extra inventories of dry goods, irregular sizes of fish pieces, etc... does sometimes come with the trade-off between reducing food waste yet generating additional food packaging waste.

Today I refused the pretty plastic bag from my eye doctor visit, and instead took the literature, eyeglass cloth, and misc in hand and carried them with me bagless.  It's easy to decline the plastic bag and, hopefully, this gives their staff food for thought, too.

It's been a while since I last visited my local co-op in person.  I plan to go one day soon to just look around and discover what items they now carry in bulk that would be good alternatives for our household.

Hi Jean, Which is your local co-op? For the money (Low price), I think the Seward Co-ops have the biggest selection of bulk in Minneapolis. To be a member, lend them $80. Then, every quarter you decide on the day you want 10% off. I did this in mid-December 2021.

Otherwise, I'm a member of the Linden Hills Co-op (paired with the Wedge). It's not inexpensive, but I live within walking distance.

Last night, based on a teammate's recommendation, we watched the 2019 documentary The Story of Plastic.   It helped me understand with that much more clarity the profitability for some with continued plastics production and the urgency to change our ways.

Currently, most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. What has been your experience using plastic-free toothpaste options? How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?

I purchased Bite toothpaste bits online.  They arrived in the mail yesterday.  I used one of the bits when brushing my teeth this morning and really like it - nice flavor, plenty of long-lasting foaming, fresh mouth feel.  Also, the packaging was very minimal - small glass bottle to hold the bits and the mailer was all paper.

What are some things you can do to avoid using plastic bottles and plastic caps in the first place?

I always travel and run errands with my own water bottle.  I decline offers of water in plastic bottles when attending meetings that offer them.

What has been the easiest thing about using reusables at work, and what has been the hardest? Have you convinced any of your colleagues to join you in using reusables?

When I last worked in an office, I always brought and used my own plate, mug, and silverware.  Some lunchmates started doing the same.  When you see someone else taking steps like this, it makes it easier to recognize the waste and to begin and follow more sustainable practices.

I learned about a toothpaste alternative in the form of little tablets that come in a glass jar - I will be trying them soon!  I've looked in my cupboards for items I have stocked that come in plastic packaging and am already making plans for plastic-free packaging replacements for shampoo, dishsoap, and dental floss.
